Synopsis

Suberg. 436 meters above sea level, 606 inhabitants, a train station, a school building, a restaurant and a fertilizer factory. An average village in the Swiss Mittelland. Situated half-way between Bern and Biel in the foggy valley of the Lyssbach, Suberg evolved from a sleepy farming village into a sleep-village.

I've lived in Suberg since I was born. For 31 years I successfully ignored the village and it's inhabitants. I fled from it. My way to school I never walked but ran, later I hastened to the train station without looking left or right. I told myself, if I have to live on the countryside, then I'd rather have no contact to the boring country folk. When I went to primary school, my friends lived in Suberg. Today they live in Zurich or Berlin and my evenings in the province become more and more lonely.

That's why I now want to become part of the village community. I want to get to know the village and its inhabitants. I want to understand them. I need friends to chat and drink beer with, friends who are there when you need them. I need friends in Suberg.

But how to find friends in a village that barely has any village sturctures left? And what is the reason for that? I go on a quest for remains of the village community, I meet people who influenced the village and its development and I find in the male choir a last club, whose downfall it might be solely up to me to prevail.
